Looking Back to Look Forward
Our session began with a provocative question:
Does the school system still work… or is it stuck in the past?
We explored how the traditional school year originally evolved to release children during the summer months to support agricultural harvests. Together, we reflected:
Are we doing things because they genuinely work for children today, or simply because we’ve always done them?
With that in mind, we traced our journey as a Trust:
- Before 2015,
- 2015, when Manor Hall Academy Trust was formed,
- 2020, a year that reshaped education globally, and
- 2025, where we now stand.
This created a shared understanding of how far we’ve come and offered a lens for imagining what comes next.
Reflecting on the Present
We then turned inward. Leaders spent time considering:
- What we are grateful for,
- What we regret, and
- What we are sorry for.
These honest reflections set the tone for a day of deep thinking—grounded not in criticism, but in hope, responsibility and collective ambition.
Envisioning a Bold Future
The workshop then centred on five key future-vision themes:
- Learning, Development & Care Experiences for All
- People, Roles & Belonging
- Physical Place, Space & the Natural World
- The Digital World
- Collaboration & Growth Within and Beyond the Trust and System
- (Plus anything else that sits outside the five themes)
Everyone contributed ideas on post‑it notes, imagining what the future could look like if barriers were removed and innovation was encouraged.
We then worked in groups at each of the five stations to develop Imagine Statements—powerful descriptions of a future we believe is possible.
Our Collective Imagine Statements
1. Learning, Development & Care Experiences for All
- “Imagine a school where children feel safe and self‑assured, and where learning is personalised through genuine collaboration with families—building a curriculum that equips children for life well beyond the classroom.”
- “Imagine a school where every child is met exactly where they are, not by chance but by design.”
2. People, Roles & Belonging
- “Imagine a school where belonging is the heartbeat of our community every single day.”
- “Imagine a school that has cultivated an ecosystem where therapeutic practice is woven into every interaction—where our people lead with empathy, regulation and clinical understanding.”
- “Imagine a school where the best people with the right skill set are deployed at the precise moment a child needs support, supported by a flexible and adaptable workforce.”
3. Physical Place, Space & The Natural World
- “Imagine a school where education and nature become one—every inch purpose‑built, forming the centre and heartbeat of our communities.”
- This group took the vision even further:
- “Imagine a village where the school shapes and educates throughout every stage of life.”
4. The Digital World
- “Imagine a school where fully automated admin is live, responsive and consistent.”
- “Imagine a school where teachers can bring learning to life through immersive tools such as VR.”
- “Imagine a school where digital resources are equitable and accessible to all.”
- “Imagine a school where children are safe online, and where technology enhances—not replaces—the value of human connection.”
5. Collaboration & Growth Beyond the Trust and System
- “Imagine a school system that eradicates barriers to pupils having their needs met.”
- “Imagine a school where the curriculum is designed in equal partnership with employers—where every contribution to society is equally valued.”
- “Imagine a school system that rises above barriers to utilise a rich range of professionals, settings and community knowledge—building a society where everyone belongs, is accepted and understood.”
Turning Vision into Action
The day concluded with practical discussions about how we begin making this imagined future a reality. Leaders identified small changes, big aspirations, and collaborative steps we can start taking now.
The atmosphere throughout the day was inspiring. The room buzzed with passion, curiosity and energy-fuelled by a shared commitment to our young people and to shaping a system where everyone truly belongs, learns and grows.
We are incredibly fortunate to have school leaders across our Trust who are bold, dedicated and unwavering in their mission to create the very best future for our learners.
