Manor Hall Academy Trust is delighted to share the outcome of the recent Ofsted inspection at Finch Woods Academy, which recognises the substantial progress being made across the school and highlights the positive impact of the work undertaken by leaders, staff, governors and trustees.
The inspection, conducted in March 2026, found that safeguarding standards are fully met and judged leadership and governance to be operating at a Strong Standard, recognising the rapid and purposeful improvements made across the academy.
Delivering Meaningful and Sustainable Improvement
The inspection highlights the significant progress made across Finch Woods Academy in recent years, recognising the clear vision, strong leadership and collective commitment that are driving improvements across the school. Inspectors praised leaders for their purposeful approach, noting that they have established a stable and effective leadership structure alongside a sharply focused improvement strategy.
The report recognises the positive impact of this work on pupils’ experiences, with improvements seen in the quality of education, behaviour, inclusion and personal development. Inspectors found that pupils benefit from a safe, calm and nurturing environment where staff understand their needs and provide the support necessary for them to engage, achieve and thrive.
By working collaboratively with staff, governors, families and the wider Trust, Finch Woods Academy continues to strengthen outcomes for pupils and build on the positive foundations established across the school community.

The report acknowledges the crucial role played by Manor Hall Academy Trust in supporting Finch Woods Academy’s continued development. Inspectors noted that governance and trust oversight are rigorous, with detailed monitoring, robust challenge and clear accountability helping to drive substantial improvement.
Ofsted also recognised the significant investment made by the Trust in stabilising leadership, strengthening safeguarding, improving curriculum design and securing better outcomes for pupils.
Improving Outcomes for Pupils
Finch Woods Academy serves children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs, many of whom have experienced disrupted education before joining the school. Inspectors found that most pupils are making steady progress from their starting points, with improvements in confidence, engagement and perseverance evident across the school.
The report highlights the academy’s growing range of qualifications and pathways, including vocational opportunities and functional skills programmes, helping pupils become better prepared for further education, employment and training.
A Safe, Calm and Nurturing Environment
Inspectors recognised the significant improvements made to behaviour, culture and wellbeing. They found that clear expectations, strong relationships and effective de-escalation strategies have helped create a safe and purposeful learning environment where pupils feel supported and valued.
The academy was praised for its nurturing approach, therapeutic support and the wide range of opportunities available to help pupils regulate emotions, build resilience and develop confidence. Many pupils spoke positively about the trusted relationships they have with staff and the progress they have made both academically and personally.
Inclusion at the Heart of the Academy
A particular strength identified during the inspection was the academy’s inclusive culture. Inspectors noted that leaders have developed a detailed understanding of pupils’ complex needs and work closely with families and external professionals to ensure every child receives the support they need.
The report highlights the effective use of personalised support, therapeutic interventions and specialist provision, ensuring that pupils can achieve, belong and thrive.
