Peer Study Review with St Bart’s: Strengthening Practice Through Collaboration

Recently, colleagues across our Trust took part in a Peer Study Review with St Bart’s Multi Academy Trust – a valuable opportunity to connect, reflect and learn alongside peers in similar roles.

Although the day itself has passed, its impact continues to be felt. Staff described the experience as both affirming and inspiring, highlighting the importance of collaboration across trusts.

A Shared Experience

A common theme throughout the day was just how aligned both trusts are — not only in practice, but in values and approach. As one colleague reflected, it was reassuring to recognise that many of the priorities, challenges and upcoming pressures are shared:

“It was a bit like reassurance that we’re actually in very similar boats, dealing with similar things and we can really support each other in a mutually beneficial way.”
— Laura Green, Head of People

This sense of shared understanding created a space for open, honest dialogue and meaningful professional reflection.

Valuing Time to Connect

For many, the dedicated time to step away from day-to-day responsibilities and engage in focused discussion was one of the most valuable aspects of the day.

Senior leaders and colleagues across operations, IT, and people services spoke about the benefit of being able to “deep dive” into their roles with someone who truly understands their scope and complexity:

“It was refreshing to spend time with someone who truly understands the breadth and complexity of the COO role — that sense of shared understanding made the experience especially impactful.”
— Kate Staples, Chief Operating Officer

Similarly, colleagues found that these conversations quickly revealed strong alignment in systems, processes and priorities:

“We chatted through our processes and quickly realised how closely aligned we are… we both came away having learned something new.”
— Kelly, Operations Officer

Collaboration Over Reinvention

A key takeaway from the day was the importance of sharing practice and avoiding duplication of effort. The opportunity to exchange ideas, resources and approaches was seen as a significant strength of the partnership:

“‘Sharing is caring’ — let’s stop reinventing the wheel. Working together on things or sharing good practice is such a gift to give and to receive!”
— Laura Green, Head of People

This collaborative mindset has already extended beyond the event itself, with colleagues maintaining contact and continuing to support each other in their work:

“We’ve stayed in touch since… it’s like having a like-minded professional buddy!”
— Kelly, Operations Officer

Looking Ahead

The Peer Study Review has laid strong foundations for ongoing partnership between both trusts. Leaders spoke about the value of creating lasting connections that will support future collaboration and ultimately enhance outcomes for pupils:

“It has created a connection which will result in future collaboration, improving how pupils are supported to thrive.”
— Paul Spreadbury, Chief Education Lead

The experience also reinforced the value of outward-facing practice — taking time to learn from others, reflect on our own approaches and continue evolving to meet the needs of our communities.

As one colleague summed up:

“What a great day… I look forward to spending time doing more of the same.”
— Vickie Keeling, Chief Operations Officer
