Celebrating Collaboration: Highly Commended at the MAT Awards

We are proud to share that Manor Hall Academy Trust, in partnership with BeReady, was awarded Highly Commended at the MAT Awards on Thursday 11th June for our work on the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant programme.

This recognition reflects a truly collaborative effort, built on shared expertise, trust and a collective commitment to improving outcomes for pupils—particularly those with SEND.

A Programme Built with Purpose

The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant programme was developed to bridge an important gap within the education workforce. For a number of years, Headteachers across the Trust have identified the need for a clear progression route for Teaching Assistants, particularly those looking to move into Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) roles with a SEND focus.

Working in partnership with BeReady provided the opportunity to design a programme that is both academically rigorous and highly relevant to real classroom practice. From the outset, the focus has been on ensuring that learning translates directly into impact—supporting Teaching Assistants to apply new knowledge, reflect on their practice and strengthen the support they provide to pupils every day.

Responding to a Growing Need

The timing of this work is particularly important. With increasing demand across the sector, including a rise in EHCPs and continued pressure on high needs funding, the need for a highly skilled and confident support workforce has never been greater.

This programme is one way we are responding proactively—developing a strong internal pipeline of skilled professionals who are equipped to support inclusive classrooms and improve outcomes for all learners.

We are already seeing the impact within the Trust, with over 30 participants currently on the programme and beginning to develop as confident, knowledgeable practitioners ready to take the next step in their careers.

Designed for Real Schools

A key strength of the programme is its practical design. It has been carefully structured to work alongside the school day, allowing participants to remain in the classroom while completing their studies through flexible, remote learning.

Learners are supported by dedicated mentors both within their schools and through the programme, ensuring a balance of on-the-job guidance and wider professional development. Weekly tasks are closely linked to their role, enabling them to embed learning in real time without placing additional pressure on school operations.

The opportunity to specialise in areas such as SEND, Social and Emotional Wellbeing, or Curriculum Provision further strengthens the programme, allowing participants to develop expertise that reflects both their interests and the needs of their setting.

The Power of Partnership

At the heart of this programme is a genuine partnership between Manor Hall Academy Trust and BeReady.

Colleagues across both organisations—including curriculum specialists, programme authors, quality assurance teams, delivery staff, school leaders and practitioners—have worked closely together to shape and refine the content. This has ensured the programme is grounded in the realities of school life, while remaining ambitious in its intent.

A special mention must go to Sarah Martin, Executive Headteacher of Adelaide Heath Academy, Finch Woods Academy and Adelaide School, whose insight, expertise and commitment have been instrumental throughout the development process. Her contribution, alongside many others, has helped ensure the programme reflects current practice and meets the real needs of schools.

This collaboration has been defined by openness and a shared sense of purpose—where ideas have been challenged, refined and strengthened to create the best possible experience for learners.

A Proud Moment

Being recognised at the MAT Awards was a proud moment for everyone involved and a reflection of the dedication and collective effort across both organisations.

As Kate Staples, COO of Manor Hall Academy Trust, shared:

“This has been a labour of love for everyone involved… this recognition reinforces the impact that strong partnerships can deliver. Our work with BeReady… continues to show what is possible when we collaborate with purpose.”

Looking Ahead

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of this work is seeing how it is already making a difference—supporting Teaching Assistants in their professional development, strengthening inclusive practice and ultimately improving outcomes for children and young people.

We are excited to see how the programme continues to grow, and to build on this success as we support even more colleagues across our schools.
