For governing bodies of maintained schools, the decision to embrace the process of academisation is one of the most crucial choices they will face. However, the Department of Education (DfE) has made this decision even more challenging by signalling that single converter schools or empty Multi Academy Trusts (MATs) are unlikely to receive approval for conversion.
As a newly established Collaborative Educational Trust, we have quickly realized the rationale behind the DfE’s stance. Developing Trusts with 10 or fewer schools encounter significant financial challenges when it comes to designing and implementing centralised services to meet the demands of the academy process. Achieving economies of scale necessitates larger clusters of schools.
Schools are now left with three apparent choices. The first option is to join a MAT with potential sponsors that already have established systems and support structures. While these MATs may seem corporate and centralized, joining them means you may have limited say in their governance or strategic direction, as their pathways have already been set.
The second option is to collaborate with other maintained schools, establishing a lead school or appointing an independent CEO, and presenting your case directly to the DfE.
Each choice comes with its own set of considerations, and it’s essential for governing bodies to thoroughly assess their specific circumstances, values, and goals before making the right decision for their school’s future.
At our Collaborative Educational Trust, we prioritize transparency, autonomy, and the shared vision of all our member schools. We believe in empowering schools to have an active voice in shaping their future while benefiting from the collective support and expertise of the Trust. If you are seeking a collaborative approach that emphasizes your school’s unique identity and values, we invite you to explore the possibilities of joining our Trust.
We understand that this decision is significant and requires careful thought and evaluation. Our team is here to provide the necessary information and support you need to make an informed and confident choice for the future of your school.
