Back to School Safely at Adelaide 🛡️🍎

As the new school year begins, Adelaide School is proud to place health and safety at the heart of everything we do. Our top priority is ensuring every student, staff member, and visitor feels safe, supported, and ready to thrive in a secure learning environment.

What Makes Safety at Adelaide So Strong

1. Audited Systems & Regular Checks
Safety isn’t a box to tick—it’s part of our daily routine. Adelaide’s health and safety measures undergo regular external audits, including checks of water systems and fire precautions. Half-termly inspection visits by LAB member Debbie Field help us stay on top of emerging trends and needs.

2. A Trained & Dedicated Health & Safety Team
Adelaide benefits from a strong team of staff who lead and coordinate our approach to safety:

  • Emma Philo – Health and Safety Lead
  • Claire Birchall – Site Manager
  • Kristina Herring – Office Manager & Health & Safety Coordinator
  • Sarah Barlow – Headteacher (and a key safeguarding lead)

3. Prepared for Emergencies
From thorough risk assessments covering every area of school life — including trips and visits — to regularly scheduled fire drills and lockdown practice sessions, everyone knows what to do in an emergency. With trained first aiders always on site, Adelaide ensures staff and students are prepared for any eventuality.

4. Security That Builds Trust
Adelaide’s entry protocols ensure every visitor is identified and monitored. Visitors sign in at reception and wear colour-coded lanyards — red for those without DBS checks — so staff always know who is on site. External doors remain secure and accessible only to staff, while safeguarding policies are reviewed annually by the Headteacher and DSL.

5. Ongoing Measures for Improvement
Looking ahead to 2025/26, Adelaide is focused on:

  • Enhancing site security with improved external door access
  • Developing more comprehensive lockdown procedures
  • Improving taxi drop-off and collection arrangements
  • Sending regular health and safety surveys to parents for feedback
  • Managing safety during the new playground build

6. Open Communication & Partnership
Safety is a shared responsibility. Parents, carers, staff, and students are all part of the conversation, and Adelaide is committed to listening and responding. If there’s ever a concern or suggestion, the school welcomes it as part of its culture of continuous improvement.
